“A Sledgehammer Breaks Glass but Forges Steel”: Bacteria Adhesion Shapes Gut Immunity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Gut bacteria are known to affect immune cell development, but most intestinal lymphocytes have no direct contact with luminal bacteria. Two studies by Atarashi et al. and Sano et al. shed light on how bacterial adhesion can cue intestinal epithelial cells to direct differentiation of gut T cells.

Potential of the adhesion of bacteria isolated from drinking water to materials.
Heterotrophic bacteria (11 genera, 14 species, 25 putative strains) were isolated from drinking water, identified either biochemically or by partial 16s rDNA gene sequencing and their adherence characteristics were determined by two methods: i. thermodynamic prediction of adhesion potential by measuring hydrophobicity (contact angle measurements) and ii. by measuring adherence to eight differen...
متن کاملAssessing the Impact of Germination and Sporulation Conditions on the Adhesion of Bacillus Spores to Glass and Stainless Steel by Fluid Dynamic Gauging
The adhesion of spores of 3 Bacillus species with distinctive morphologies to stainless steel and borosilicate glass was studied using the fluid dynamic gauging technique. Marked differences were observed between different species of spores, and also between spores of the same species prepared under different sporulation conditions. Spores of the food-borne pathogen B. cereus were demonstrated ...
متن کاملAdhesion to and viability of Listeria monocytogenes on food contact surfaces.
Listeria monocytogenes is an important pathogen responsible for major outbreaks associated with food products. Adhesion to surfaces leads to significant modifications in cell physiology. The aim of this work was to determine the adhesion ability of 10 isolates of L. monocytogenes to eight materials commonly used in kitchens and to evaluate the viability of the adhered cells. The materials assay...
متن کاملBacterial Adhesion to Food Contacting Surfaces
Contamination of kitchen surfaces, during food preparation, due to bacteria present in foodstuff is one of the main causes of foodborne outbreaks. Cells adhered to those surfaces of domestic kitchens are not easily removed by normal cleaning procedures. Therefore, they can be a source of contamination for other foods and objects. Several studies indicate that various pathogenic bacteria like Li...
متن کاملInteraction Between Familial Transmission and a Constitutively Active Immune System Shapes Gut Microbiota in Drosophila melanogaster
Resident gut bacteria are constantly influencing the immune system, yet the role of the immune system in shaping microbiota composition during an organism's life span has remained unclear. Experiments in mice have been inconclusive due to differences in husbandry schemes that led to conflicting results. We used Drosophila as a genetically tractable system with a simpler gut bacterial population...
